School Recitals

Please join us for the Community School’s end-of-semester recital series. This month there will be a number of School Recitals showcasing the talented instrumentalists and vocalists of the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts. Each recital will feature hand-selected students from our Friday Night Recital series in a more formal setting. Approximately one in twenty students are recommended by a jury panel to perform in a School Recital each semester. 

This semester’s school recitals will be in Thayer Hall on the following dates:

Friday, May 16 at 7:30 pm
Sunday, May 18 at 1:30 pm & 4:30 pm
Friday, May 23 at 7:30 pm
Saturday, May 24 at 1:30 pm & 7:30 pm
Sunday, May 25 at 1:30 pm, 4:30 pm & 7:30 pm

The Colburn Community School of Performing Arts summer session is here. Registration for new students begins on May 13. In addition to our class schedule, there will also be a Choir Camp, Teen Tap Intensive, Musical Theater Camp, and Musical Theater High School Workshop. Fall 2014 auditions are now being scheduled for participation in several of the Community School’s ensembles. Colburn Youth Orchestra, Colburn Chamber Orchestra, Ed & Mari Edelman Chamber Music Institute, String Orchestra, String Ensemble, Violin Ensemble, and Cello Choir auditions will be in June. Auditions for all vocal ensembles are ongoing. For more information, please call 213.621.4548 or email cspa@colburnschool.edu.

Community School
Two groups from Community School’s Ed & Mari Edelman Chamber Music Institute competed in the semi-finals of the junior division of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association’s Competition last weekend:
1) Trio Carosello (violinist Geneva Lewis, cellist Rochelle Lewis and pianist Katelyn Vahala), coached by Aimée Kreston.
2) Quartet Firenze (violinists Hao Zhou and Tiffany Chung, violist Nathan Wong and cellist Iona Batchelder), coached by Ida Levin.
Quartet Firenze moved into the finals to win the bronze medal and is the first group from California to ever win a medal in the junior division on the Fischoff Competition. Congratulations to both of these groups and their teachers. Click here for more information.

Hao Zhou, was named "Artist of the Year" by the Orange County Register.

Community School student Jocelyn Zhu won Second Prize in the California Association of Professional Music Teachers District III Sonata/Sonatina Competition. Jocelyn studies piano with Jeesung Kang.

Two Community School students placed in the Glendale Branch of the Music Teachers Association of California Scholarship Competition. HanByeol Park won the Grand Prize and Hanna Yoon won Second Prize. Both students study piano with Heewon Kwon. 

Conservatory
Colburn Conservatory of Music alum Silu Fei (class of 2010) just won a Section Viola position with the Utah Symphony (Previously, he was a member of the Oregon Symphony). 

Academy Piano Festival is Just Weeks Away

Be one of 30 young pianists from around the world and study at the Colburn Young Artists Academy Piano Festival this summer, July 2 - 16. This year’s festival will feature the wide-ranging piano sonata literature as its centerpiece, and will provide gifted, pre-college age pianists with two weeks of conservatory-level instruction. Additionally, students receive four 50-minute private lessons, and will participate in at least two master classes. Click here for information on how to apply.

Call for Musicians: Colburn Adult Wind Symphony

The Colburn Adult Wind Symphony is looking for experienced woodwind, brass and percussionists to join in the summer fun. Performing works from the Americana, bandstand and film repertoire, the ensemble will present three concerts from June through August in Downtown Los Angeles’ own Grand Park. Several Colburn tudents placed in their respective divisions of local area competitions for the American String Teachers Association and many will now move on to compete in the state finals at the end of the month:

Community School

  • Cameron Alan-Lee won First Prize in the Pre-College Violin category in the Greater Los Angeles County Division. He studies violin with Aimée Kreston.
  • Charles Cheng won Second Prize in the Elementary Cello category in the Redlands Division. He studies cello with Stan Sharp.
  • William Ellzey won First Prize in the Pre-College Cello category in the Greater Los Angeles County Division. William studies cello with Stan Sharp.
  • Hannah Kim won the Annual Bowed String Solo Recital Competition in the Greater Los Angeles County Division.  Hannah studies cello with Stan Sharp.
  • Rachael Kim won First Prize in the Elementary Violin category in the Redlands Division. Rachael studies violin with Henry Gronnier.
  • Hazel Koh won First Prize in the Elementary Violin category in the Orange County Division. She studies violin with Aimée Kreston.
  • Timothy Le won Third Prize in the Pre-College Violin category in the Greater Los Angeles Division. Timothy studies violin with Henry Gronnier.

  • Cassiel McEvoy won Second Prize in the Pre-College Violin category in the Greater Los Angeles County Division. Cassiel studies violin with Henry Gronnier.
  • Moses Oh won Second Prize in the Elementary Cello category in the Northwestern Los Angeles County Division. Moses studies cello with Stan Sharp.
  • Jessica Park won Second Prize in the Pre-College Violin category. Jessica studies violin with Richard Schwabe.
  • Yi-Mei Templeman won First Prize in the Elementary Cello category in the Northwestern Los Angeles County Division.  She studies cello with Stan Sharp.
  • Louis Wong won Third Prize in the Elementary Cello category. He studies cello with Stan Sharp.
Academy
  • Mya Greene won First Prize in the Pre-College Viola category. She studies viola with Gina Coletti.

 

Community School Honors Recital

The Community School’s Honors Recital is this Sunday, June 1 at 3 pm in Zipper Hall. Performing will be soloists Felix Jen (piano), Roger Justo (flute), Kazumi Kanagawa (piano), Daniel Lee (piano), Kevin Miura (violin), and Abigel Szilagyi (violin); piano quartet Melodi Hess (violin), Sequoyah Sugiyama (viola), Ethan Sandman (cello) and Nicholas Mendez (piano); piano trio Cameron Alan-Lee (violin), Tomsen Su (cello) and Yoko Rosenbaum (piano); piano trio Geneva Lewis (violin), Rochelle Lewis (cello) and Katelyn Vahala (piano); and duet Melodi Hess (violin) and Tomsen Su (cello). Admission is free and the performance will be followed by a reception to celebrate with our students and faculty. For more information click here

Colburn Jazz Workshop Concert

The Community School’s Colburn Jazz Workshop will present a concert with the Monday Night and Thursday Night Bands directed by Lee Secard on May 31 at 7:30 pm in Thayer Hall. They will also be joined by Colburn Community School alumni. If you missed hearing these talented young jazz students at Taste of Colburn in March, or would love to hear them again, this is the perfect opportunity. Admission is free and open to the public.

Colburn Dance Academy Auditions

Our first round of auditions for the Colburn Dance Academy were fantastic, and we are looking forward to continuing our search in San Fransisco, New York and Los Angeles in the coming months.

Made up of a select group of up to 12 student dancers, the Colburn Dance Academy provides personalized instruction and mentorship to students, as they pursue their goal of becoming professional dancers and artistic leaders.

The Colburn Dance Academy is led by Director Jenifer Ringer, Associate Director James Fayette, Artistic Advisor Benjamin Millepied, and is affiliated with the L.A. Dance Project.

Primrose International Viola Competition and Festival

Starting the week of June 8, The Colburn School will host the Primrose International Viola Competition and Festival with a series of recitals, master classes, wellness sessions and workshops. Among the list of impressive featured performers will be Colburn Conservatory of Music faculty members Paul Coletti and Martin Beaver, and select Colburn Young Artists Academy faculty.

Over the course of the three-day event, workshop sessions will focus on the broad spectrum of twenty-first-century musicianship, including entrepreneurship, networking and community engagement. Representatives from the radio and television show "From the Top" will be on hand Friday, June 13 for a Career Workshop.  

Tickets for the festival are available for $125 or at the discounted rate of $95 for students and seniors. Daily tickets are also available for $45 ($40 for students and seniors). For a complete schedule of events and detail on registering, click here.

Community School trombone instructor, Taylor Hughey, was awarded the Robert Marsteller Memorial Endowed Music Award from USC’s Thornton School of Music.  

Community School cello instructor, Carey Beth Hockett, has been elected to the American Guild of Music’s Board of Directors.

Multiple Community School students placed in their respective divisions of the Musical Arts Club of Orange County Competition. Hannah Kim and Thompson Wang both won First Prizes, Robert Shlyakhtenko and Sydney Mariano both won Second Prizes, Mikaela Licudine won Third Prize, and Alexander Licudine and Chelsea Mariano won Honorable Mentions.  Robert, Mikaela and Alexander study piano with Teresa de Jong Pombo. Hannah, Thompson, Chelsea and Sydney study violin with Sam Fischer.

Robert Shlyakhtenko, Victor Shlyakhtenko, Matthew Leung, Kaitlin Webster-Zuber, Emily Webster-Zuber, Nicholas Mendez, Richard Qiu, Haoxian Hu, Allie Wang, and Will Robles were all regional winners in the Southern California Junior Bach Festival Competition and will go on to compete in the Complete Work audition in the fall. And Nicholas Taplitz won Honorable Mention in the Anna Magdalena Bach Category.  Robert and Victor study piano with Teresa de Jong Pombo. Matthew, Kaitlin and Emily study piano with Jeesung Kang. Nicholas M., Richard, Haoxian and Allie study piano with Jeff Lavner. Will studies piano with Miji Kim. And Nicholas T. studies piano with Grace Huang.
