Tune-in to KUSC 91.5 this Sunday at 6 pm to hear the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts’ Colburn Youth Orchestra directed by Maestro Maxim Eshkenazy. The orchestra will perform live at LACMA’s Bing Theater (free admission) for their Sundays Live program. The program will include Rossini’s William Tell Overture, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagno, Ravel’s Pavane and Borodin’s Polovetsian Dances.

Community School
Community School students Carlos Aguilar (flute) and Nathan Wong (viola) were accepted into Carnegie Hall’s prestigious National Youth Orchestra of the United States. Carlos plays flute in the Honors Woodwind Quintet and Colburn Youth Orchestra. Nathan studies viola with John Hayhurst and plays in the Honors String Quartet and Colburn Youth Orchestra.
Community School student, Victor Shlyakhtenko, was the State Winner in both the California Association of Professional Music Teachers Concerto Competition and Honors Audition. Victor studies piano with Teresa de Jong Pombo.
Community School students Ryan Choi, Adele Wallrich, Emily Webster-Zuber, Kaitlin Webster-Zuber, Annette Woo and Miles Woo were all winners in the Hollywood branch of the 2014 Music Teachers Association of California Sonata/Sonatina Competition. These students all study piano with Jeesung Kang.
Dance
Congratulations to our Trudl Zipper Dance Institute’s Advanced Studies student Michael Stukan, who auditioned for, and was awarded a tuition scholarship from the prestigious Petit Oasis Foundation — a private non-profit organization offering scholarship to boys living within 150 miles of Los Angeles between the ages of 8 and 18 years old who strive to be professional ballet dancers.
Conservatory
Having graduated from the Conservatory barely 2 years ago as an undergrad, Conservatory alum Kelsey Blumenthal has just won a seat in the 1st violin section of the Pittsburgh Symphony!
Conservatory bassoonist Dana Jackson won the 2nd Bassoon position at the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra.

Another International Competition Win for Sang Yoon Kim
On Saturday, Colburn Conservatory of Music clarinetist Sang Yoon Kim won First Prize at the 1st Unisa International Competition for Flute and Clarinet in Pretoria, South Africa. A protege of Yehuda Gilad in the Conservatory, Sang Yoon also won two special awards: Best Performance of a classical work (Devienne Sonata) and Best Performance of a South African work (A. Johnson's Colour Keys). In addition to receiving cash prizes of approximately $20,000, Sang Yoon will also be given the opportunity to perform with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra in Venezuela as well as a multi-city concert tour of South Africa.
Chamber Music Collage Recital on Sunday
Join us for an afternoon performance of chamber music, featuring ensembles from the Community School, the Colburn Conservatory of Music, and the Adult Studies program this Sunday, February 23 at 12:30 pm in Thayer Hall. Performers include the Community School Honors String Quartet, a piano quartet from the Adult Studies Chamber Music Intensive program, and two Conservatory chamber ensembles coached by Martin Beaver and Clive Greensmith, formerly of the Tokyo String Quartet. The recital will feature works by Brahms and Faure, among others. The concert is free and open to the public.
Conservatory Students to Collaborate with wild Up in Santa Ana this Saturday
This Saturday evening, musicians from the Colburn Conservatory of Music will collaborate with the LA-based experimental classical group, wild Up, to fuse classical instruments with contemporary sounds and create an unforgettable evening in one of Santa Ana's most charming venues, The Santora.

Smoke and Mirrors Ensemble to Perform
The Smoke and Mirrors Ensemble, featuring percussionists from the Colburn Conservatory of Music, will perform at LACMA’s Bing Theater this Sunday, February 23 at 6 pm on their venerated Sundays Live Series. The Marina Ensemble was formed in 1984 as a piano trio, which included Community School String Department Chair Richard Schwabe and cello faculty Nancy Yamagata. Community School viola faculty, Margaret Shimizu, joined the ensemble in 1997, transforming the group into a piano quartet. The addition of violin faculty, Rumi Shimasaki, in 1999 enabled the ensemble to expand its repertoire to include piano quintets. The Marina Ensemble’s primary mission has been to educate and promote chamber music to young audiences, which remains the same today.

Pianists! Learn the Art of Dance Accompaniment
The Colburn Community School of Performing Arts is pleased to offer a special course for pianists interested in learning the art of being a dance accompanist. Through four consecutive Saturdays, world-renowned Dance Accompanist, Michael Roberts, will instruct students on how to accompany both the ballet class as well as the modern dance class. The culmination of all of the classes will end with an opportunity to sit in on a dance class where Michael Roberts is accompanying dancers.

Community School alumnus and jazz pianist, Eric Reed, will appear with the Buster Williams Quartet at REDCAT on February 20. Eric was a student at Colburn from 1981 to 1988. He first garnered attention as a permanent member of Wynton Marsalis’ ensembles (1990-95), making countless recordings and TV appearances with him. He also worked in the bands of Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson (1991-92) after which his resume would flourish with names such as Wayne Shorter, Jessye Norman, Patti Labelle, Edwin Hawkins, Quincy Jones, Natalie Cole, and numerous others. Community School students Iona Batchelder and Sydney Mariano will appear as guest artists with the Salastina Music Society on their February 21 performance, where Community School faculty member, Maia Jasper, is Co-Artistic Director. Community School student, Adrian Cota, received the Honorable Mention in the Music Center’s 2014 Spotlight Competition as a semi-finalist in the Jazz Instrumental Division. Adrian plays drums in the Monday Night Band directed by Lee Secard.

Colburn Chamber Music Society Concert Sunday
This Sunday, March 2 at 3 pm, the thoughtful and brilliant violinist Viviane Hagner will perform in Colburn's acoustically-superb Zipper Hall for an enchanting Colburn Chamber Music Society concert. The concert also welcomes the return of Conservatory alumna Elizabeth Schumann (piano), and will feature select students of the Colburn Conservatory of Music and faculty, including Clive Greensmith and Paul Coletti.
Taste Colburn Will Honor Donald Vega
There’s something for everyone in our Community School performances at Taste of Colburn. But jazz lovers are in for a special treat, as we honor Distinguished Alumnus Donald Vega, renowned jazz pianist. Mr. Vega was born in Nicaragua, and after his family moved to Los Angeles, he studied piano at the Colburn School, with amazing and beloved faculty including Lee Secard, Jeff Lavner and Teresa de Jong Pombo! Not only will we honor Mr. Vega, but he will perform and will share the stage with our jazz students. It’s just another reason not to miss Taste of Colburn.

Community School violinist and faculty member, Alice Schoenfeld, will receive the 2014 Young Musicians Foundation Humanitarian Award at their annual Gala; and Community School student, Geneva Lewis, will perform the Bach Double Violin Concerto with Glenn Dicterow. Geneva studies violin with Aimée Kreston.
Community School student Aurora Blue was cast in the upcoming film, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, starring Val Kilmer as Mark Twain. Community School student, Brian Jan, was awarded the Emmerson Scholar Award to attend the Interlochen Center for the Arts this summer. Brian studies horn with Kristy Morrell.
Community School student, Aurora Blue, won the Award of Excellence in the National PTA Reflections Competition in the Dance Choreography category. She will now go on to compete in the state competition. Aurora studies ballet in the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute.

Time is running out to buy your tickets to Taste of Colburn on Saturday, March 15, where you can participate in a silent auction, enjoy world-class performances, and sample delicious local cuisine. There will be food stations from various local restaurants, craft beer from local breweries, specialty cocktails, and a multitude of sweet treats from various Los Angeles bakeries.
Food stations from Lotería Grill (which just opened a downtown location!), New Moon Café and our own Café will offer a range of ethnically inspired flavors. Craft beer from Stone Brewing Co., Angel City Brewery and Golden Road Brewing. Specialty cocktails crafted from Hubert’s Lemonade flavors. Desserts from Urth Caffe, Big Man Bakes, and Semi Sweet Bakeshop.
Performing ensembles include choir, chamber music, tap, ballet, youth orchestra, and jazz.
