Tune-in to KUSC 91.5 this Sunday at 6 pm to hear the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts’ Colburn Chamber Orchestra directed by Maestro Maxim Eshkenazy. The orchestra will perform live at LACMA’s Bing Theater (free admission) for their Sundays Live program. The program will include Mendelssohn’s Sinfonia No. 7 and Grieg’s Two Norwegian Airs. Community School faculty member and double bassist, Dr. David H. Young, will perform an exciting concert in Thayer Hall on Saturday, February 8 at 3 pm!  This performance will include collaborations with other Community School faculty, including Gina Coletti (viola), Sam Fischer (violin), Jennie Jung (piano), Liz Kinnon (jazz piano), Stan Sharp (cello) and Kenton Youngstrom (guitar). The program will include works by Bach, Bottesini, Fauré, Vaughan-Williams and Wilder.

Community School Collaborative Concert at Ramón C. Cortines

The Community School will be presenting their second annual Collaboration Concert on Saturday, February 15 at 6 pm. This is an exciting performance that will bring together the Colburn Youth Orchestra, Colburn Chamber Orchestra, Colburn Concert Choir, Young Men’s Chorus, ballet and modern dance students. The students will share the stage at the Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts, located just down Grand Avenue from The Colburn School.  Dr. Mikhail Shtangrud and Maxim Eshkenazy will both take the podium to lead these groups in an evening of collaborative pieces, including the Flower Duet from Delibes’ Lakmé, selections from Paulli’s Konservatoriet and Dvořák’s Carnival Overture. The performance will close with Borodin’s rousing Polovetsian Dances, performed by the Colburn Youth Orchestra, Colburn Concert Choir, Young Men’s Chorus and ballet students from the Advanced Studies program.

"I am a Dancer" Film Screening at Colburn

The Colburn Dance Council cordially invites you to a screening of I am a Dancer on Sunday, February 16, 2 pm in Thayer Hall. The documentary, which captures Rudolf Nureyev at the peak of his career, will be introduced by Elizabeth Kaye — friend and travel companion of Nureyev’s. She will also recount some of her experiences with this amazing man who was as brilliant as he was unique.

Colburn Faculty Member Performs with The Beatles

Colburn Community School of Performing Arts horn teacher, Annie Bosler, played French horn with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr for a special broadcast titled, "The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the Beatles," which will air on CBS on February 9. The LA Times interviewed Annie in a feature about this exciting opportunity: “To be able to play a piece of music you grew up with is awesome," said Annie Bosler, one of four L.A.-based French horn players brought in to replicate the signature horn part in "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" that's part of McCartney's set. "To get to play it in front of the guys who created it is just amazing.”

Sign-Up Now for Adult Dance Classes at Colburn

The Colburn School’s Trudl Zipper Dance Institute is excited to offer three mid-day offerings a week for the growing downtown adult population, including:  Pilates Mat Class, Anusara-Inspired Yoga and Adult Tap.

Whether you have the day off or are just looking for a challenge on your lunch break, our adult classes promise to help you break a sweat while building new skills.

Anusara-Inspired Yoga and Pilates Mat Class, led by Diana Beardsley and Leslie Carothers-Aromaa, are drop-in classes that students can attend with the purchase of a dance card. Thursdays Adult Tap, led by professional hoofer Hiroshi Hamanishi, is a semester-long offering.

Anusara-Inspired Yoga: Tuesday, 11 am in Dance Studio B
Pilates Mat Class: Wednesday, 11:30 am in Dance Studio A
Adult Tap: Thursday, 1:30 pm in Dance Studio B

Boy Ballet Class Extended to 85 Minutes

The Trudl Zipper Dance Institute is pleased to announce that Boys Ballet, taught by Octavio Galindo, is now an 85-minute offering (up from 60 minutes)! Boys Ballet focuses on developing strength, control, coordination, flexibility, and musicality, incorporating exercises on the floor, at the barre, and in the center floor. This class provides an ideal progression from Boys Movin’ and introduces boys to the art of ballet, while honing the skills needed for all dance forms and improving sports performance.

Boys Ballet is offered on Wednesday, from 7-10 pm

17-year-old Colburn Conservatory of Music violinist and Academy alum, Simone Porter, will make her Hollywood Bowl debut on Thursday, September 4! Simone will perform the Barber Violin Concerto with the LA Phil, conducted by Ludovic Morlot. More info: http://bit.ly/1lznKrZ

Paul Katz will teach a Cello Master Class in Thayer Hall on Friday, February 7 from 10 am to 12 pm for Conservatory of Music students. This class is free and open to the public.

Community School faculty member, Maia Jasper, will join the faculty this summer at the Luzerne Music Center in New York. Maia coaches chamber music in the Ed & Mari Edelman Chamber Music Institute. For more information about the Luzerne Music Center, visit www.luzernemusic.org.

Community School Drama Director, Debbie Devine, and Colburn satellite site, the 24th Street Theatre, received four nominations for their production of Walking the Tightrope for the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards. For more information, read the LA Times article here

The Community School’s Thursday Night Band, directed by Lee Secard, was named a finalist in the open combo division of the 2014 Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival. The Thursday Night Band will compete in Monterey at the end of March for the chance to perform in the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival. For more information, click here

Smoke and Mirrors Ensemble to Perform Three Concerts this Weekend

The Smoke and Mirrors Percussion Ensemble will perform three concerts in and around Los Angeles this weekend, including works by Reich, Applebaum, Rachmaninoff and the ensemble’s own Derek Tywoniuk. This group of Conservatory musicians, who recently won the Beverly Hills Auditions, will perform on Friday, February 14 at 7:30 pm in Encinitas ($13); Saturday, February 15 at 3 p.m. in Torrance (Free); and Sunday, February 16 at 2 pm in Beverly Hills ($20).

Conservatory Student Performs Two Recitals This Weekend

Violinist Simone Porter is performing two recitals this weekend for the South Bay Chamber Music Society series. Her performances on Friday, February 14 at 8 pm in Wilmington and Sunday, February 16 at 3 pm in Rancho Palos Verdes include the music of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, de Falla and Prokofiev. This event is free and open to the public. Yehuda Gilad with the Calidore String Quartet

Last Saturday’s concert at Ambassador Auditorium with the Colburn Orchestra, conducted by Music Director Yehuda Gilad, marked the US debut of Conservatory flutist Riria Niimura. Her performance finished with a surprise encore of a popular rock song. This concert also marked the final performance for the Calidore String Quartet as members of the Colburn Orchestra.
